Friuli Venezia Giulia is homeland to some of the best white wines of Italy. It has eight DOCs and three DOCGs. Furthermore, the great raw hams of San Daniele and of Sauris, the cooked ham of Trieste, great seafood, genuine fruits and vegetables.
We will guide you through tastings of this richness, taking due account to the seasons. Including cooking classes by great chefs.
Arrival on Thursday, departure on Monday. Accommodation in a 5 star hotel in Trieste.
Transfer from the airport. Check in and welcome by ‘your local friend’. A visit to a village with three of Italy’s best wine makers. Alternatively, a wine tasting inside one of Trieste’s fascinating caves. Dinner in the hotel.
A fisherman will take you on the sea in his boat. The catch you will enjoy in a nearby restaurant. After lunch, a tour in Trieste. Our guide will tell you the story of how Trieste, having been made a free port by the Austrian Hungarian Emperor, which it still is, grew into a prosperous multi-ethnic dynamic city, Italy’s most cosmopolitan city. We will see Trieste’s historic cafes.
Cooking class. Dinner in a restaurant in the old city.
We will visit a producer of olive oil and a wine maker macerating his wine in stone containers. The lunch will be a tasting of the various shells in the North Adriatic, and fish.
The hills are in the Spring full of spontaneous herbs and wild asparagus: we will pick some and show how they can be used in your kitchen. Thereafter, a visit to a coffee producer, a course in coffee tasting and making. For dinner, a great pizza with explanations how to excel with pizza at home.
In the morning, a visit to the Miramare castle, which the brother of the Emperor built, prior to becoming the king of Mexico. Lunch in a nearby seaside restaurant. In the afternoon, a visit to a village near Gorizia where orange wine is being brought to astonishing quality, a tour in Slovenia’s Vipacco valley and dinner in one of the best restaurants in Slovenia known for its very creative kitchen.
Time to say “Ciao! A la prossima!” to Trieste. Transfer to the airport.
