Spring on the rocky Karst countryside of Trieste. Biking and trekking. See the world’s largest cave. Pick wild asparagus and wild herbs. Painting and cooking classes.
Above Trieste, there is a plateau 300 meters above the sea, with small villages, production of excellent wine and food, a large number of caves, a rich vegetation, plentiful of walking and biking tracks, an area to explore. The Spring offers a rich variety of spontaneous herbs and wild asparagus, to be picked. Most of the population speak a Slovene dialect.
Arrival on Thursday, departure on Monday. Accommodation in a village on the Carso.
Transfer from the airport. After check in and saying hello to ‘your local friend’, you will see the famous white horses raised locally for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Dinner in the hotel.
After breakfast, you will e-bike to the Grotta Gigante that in 1995 entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest visitable cave, large enough to room St. Peter’s Church in Rome. On Carso, there are stone mines active since the Roman age, that have furnished stone to major buildings in many continents. We will visit the atelier of a local artist working with the local stones. Then time for a local aperitive and lunch in a wine bar. We continue on the e-bikes on the panoramic Napoleonica path, overlooking the Trieste Gulf. In the Prosecco village, another aperitivo. Return to the hotel. Biked distance approximately 35 km, no major hills.
In the evening a cooking class in the hotel. The dinner will therefore be what you prepare together.
After breakfast, transfer to Trieste. Our guide will tell you the story of how Trieste, having been made a free port by the Austrian Hungarian Emperor, which it still is, grew into a prosperous multi-ethnic dynamic city, Italy’s most cosmopolitan city. We will see Trieste’s historic cafes, have lunch in a buffet restaurant that the New York Times found it worth to write a page about. And a tasting of the typical local and mid-European cakes. In the afternoon, a visit to a coffee manufacturer and a course in coffee tasting and making. We then suggest you explore the offers of the FVG card you are proved with, giving free entry to many attractions. For the dinner, you are free to choose among the more than 700 locals in or close to Trieste. We will of course guide you in your choice.
After breakfast, transport by bus, visit to the Castle of Duino and the panoramic Rilke cliff walk. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote his famous Elegies during his visits to the Castle.
Lunch in an ‘agroturismo’ in a small village. This village hosts three of the best wine makers in Italy, we will visit one. After the wine experience, we head back to the hotel for an art experience. The Venezian painter Roberto del Frate, since many years living in Trieste, will introduce you to painting. Material provided, you be given individual guidance. After three hours, to your surprise, even if never having painted before, you will have finished you first painting. If you are with some experience, you will benefit the more. Dinner at the hotel.
